Nikon Coolpix S550 - I Got One
Well I decided to get a camera for summer vacation as I’m ALWAYS borrowing my brothers and I went to about 4 stores before I found the Nikon Coolpix S550. Right from the get go the size and overall simple design caught my eye (I bought it in graphite black). Its about the same size as a pack of cigarettes (world smallest body on for a 10mp) and the controls on the back are insanely simple.
The only two drawbacks in the design are: that it feels a bit awkward in the hand, just cause its boxish, and it has a fairly small screen. Its only 2.5 inches (measured diagonally) but thats understandable since its so small. Anyway, I of course looked at the specs before I bought it.
The first thing that caught my eye was the zoom. It has a 5X Optical zoom and then I saw that it had a high ISO 2000 for high sensitivity. Then of course I looked at the megapixels, it has 10 effective megapixels for those pictures you want to make big. Anyway it has some pretty cool features.
Face-priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, D-Lighting, Blink warning, and Smile mode. Face-priority finds faces and focuses on them, I think it finds up to 15 faces but I haven’t gotten to take a picture with 15 people in it yet
so don’t quote me on it. Camera Red-Eye Fix is pretty self explanatory, It automatically fixes red eye and it does a pretty good job. On the box it says that it has been patented by Nikon so its exclusive to them. Anyway I am looking through the manual and I don’t know how the blink warning works. Its supposed to warn you when some one in the picture is blinking. Lastly the smile mode it “ensures smiles on faces of loved ones,” well it doesn’t crack jokes, it detects when the people in the picture are smiling.
Anyway, like I said it looks very simple and its very easy to use. Navigating your way around the menus is insanely easy. Lastly the pictures quality are great, and is well worth $200.
